SFSI
I just finished up retaking the San Francisco Sex Information Hotline training. If you’re looking for a group of people more interested in sex and sexuality than I am, look no further. Everyone involved there is a volunteer and boy are they dedicated to the cause. They put on a biannual 60 hour sex educator training that covers everything from basic birth control to necrophillia and run a sex information hotline. There is a place that you can call and ask your most burning question whether it’s about the average length of the penis or more information about urethral sounding. You can reach them by calling (415) 989-SFSI or by emailing ask-us@sfsi.org.
I took the training for the first time in fall of 2007 and I came back for another 60 hours because I’m one of the organization volunteers. I’ve been hoping to solidify my knowledge and offer more time to a cause I can get behind (or on top of, in a pretzel position, spooning…) because where else can you find a group of people that really focus on providing information without offering judgement about the question?
I’ve always enjoyed the personal shares/panels the most. Being a nerd I tend to keep up on the raw information and statistics on my own but one thing I can’t always access are the stories and experiences of a wide range of people. How many people have you talked to that could tell a room full of people what it’s like to buy the services of a street sex worker? What about the experience of someone who is intersexed? You get to see what happens if you put 4 people in a line with very different relationship models. Does someone who is monogamous have something in common with someone who is celibate, asexual, polyamorous, or non-monogamous?
